Additional
Information about The ROYAL*2007*ROYALE
This year’s ROYAL*2007*ROYAL Convention and Philatelic Exhibition
will be organized by the Greater Toronto Area Philatelic Alliance (GTAPA).
The dealer’s bourse will be organized by the Canadian Stamp Dealer’s
Association (CSDA). These two organizations, along with The Royal Philatelic
Society of Canada (RPSC), are the hosts for this year’s extravaganza.
And a wonderful event it promises to be. Planning is coming together
nicely but as always, a little slower that the organizers had hoped.
Here are several “happenings” that will be held at this
year’s ROYAL.
•
The Official Opening of
ROYAL* 2007* ROYAL will be held on the Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. with
the traditional continental breakfast. The introduction of special guests
and stamp celebration of a new set of definitives will begin at 9:!5
a.m. This event is free to everyone and will precede the doors being
opened to the bourse and exhibition.
• Court of Honour:
We are pleased to announce that this show’s Court of Honour
will be a spectacular display of 40 frames of great Canadian, award-winning
collections:
Doug Lingard’s exhibit, The 1939 Royal Train Postal Markings and
Their Majesties’ Tour of N.A., Fred Fawn’s exhibit of Canada’s
Large Queens and Doug Irwin’s exhibits on Canada’s Centennial
Isssue and Niagara Fall’s Postal History.
• Exhibition Judges:
The RPSC’s Judging Coordinator, David Piercey, has recently announced
the jury for the ROYAL. The chief judge will be Doug Lingard of Ottawa.
Under the reciprocity agreement with the Australian Philatelic Federation,
Paul Barsdell will be joining the jury from Australia. The USA judge
will be Tom Fortunato from Rochester. He is also the American Commissioner.
Canadian judges will be: Rodney Paige of Thorold, Ontario and Sam Chiu
of Toronto, Ontario. Apprentice will be John Wilson also of Toronto.
• “Society Row”:
Societies, other philatelic organizations and special interest
groups, are being given the opportunity to bring their passion and special
programs to the ROYAL. Groups will include RPSC, BNAPS, GTAPA, GRVPA,
Scouts on Stamps and FQP (Royal*2008*Royale) are on board to display
their materials at their own booths and distribute or sell their products
to aid collectors. The RPSC will have a booth to encourage new memberships
and subscriptions to The Canadian Philatelist and the Quebec delegation
for advertising the 2008 ROYALE will have details of their event at
their own booth. More information about this initiative can be found
on the (www.rpsc.org) website.
• Dealer Bourse:
There will be over 50 dealers committed to the ROYAL bourse, including
UK and US dealers as well as Canada Post.
• Youth Program:
Plans are to have three special programs for the young collector at
the ROYAL. Friday will be Beginner’s Day. Invited schools groups
of beginners will attend full-day workshops with our great staff of
volunteers. Saturday will be called Hockey Thematic Day and will have
experienced young stamp collectors attend sessions on thematic collecting
and exhibiting. A trip is planned to the Hockey Hall of Fame
to take a tour of the displays. This activity will require registration.
Sunday will be a Family Stamp Day with more opportunities to learn about
the hobby and receive free philatelic material. Of course the traditional
Youth Booth run by Betty Emms (Beddoes) and sponsored by the CSDA, will
be open all three days to assist children and provide materials.
• Special Presentations:
The schedule of presentations for collectors is posted
on the websites. At present, Canada Post’s Yves Piche will be
involved as will representation from BNAPS. Many specialty groups will
also present and the usual judging seminar and the Judges’ Critique
will join in with sessions on thematic collecting, exhibiting, postal
history, to round out the schedule.
• President’s Reception and
Award’s Banquet: These events will take place
on the Saturday, in the show hotel, The Radisson Admiral Hotel at Harbourfront.
The President’s Reception (tickets at $15.00) will be held at
5:30 p.m. and the Award’s Banquet (tickets at $75.00) at 7:00
p.m. Tickets may be purchased by using the Registration
Form or on the Friday morning at the show. Please register for tickets
as soon as possible.
• Main Entrance to the Queen Elizabeth
Building: Previous stamp shows at the QE Building have
used the side doors as an entrance. The ROYAL will use the main entrance
at the front of the building. With the new BMO Soccer Stadium immediately
adjacent to the east side of the building and the special opening procedures
of the ROYAL necessitate the change in the entrance way. Also, our registration
and admissions tables will be easily accessed from the main entrance.
• Show Covers and Cancellations:
(Images)
As always, special cachet covers and show cancellations will be available
for collectors. The GTAPA’s series of postcards of Toronto’s
historic districts will be available as will special special covers
prepared by our resident cover designer and producer, Harvey Shuter
and others. Four pictorial cancellers (Images)
will also be available for collectors to use on their personally prepared
covers.
